Weingartner
was most recently VP of server technology at Oracle, but a passion for
gaming--particularly MMOs--drove him to join the Red 5 team.
"[Gaming"s]
a field that I"ve always wanted to be in. It"s a very natural fit. It
fits my personality," Weingartner told Next-Gen.
Weingartner
has worked in enterprise software for around 20 years, but all the
while has been a fan of games. He"s been a player of games like Ultima
Online, Asheron"s Call, EverQuest and Dark Age of Camelot, to name a
few. So although "enterprise software" doesn"t scream "gaming nut,"
Weingartner has been around the MMO block a few times.
Weingartner
is the latest addition to Aliso Viejo, Calif.- and Shanghai,
China-based Red 5, which currently employs around 100 people across
both offices.
CEO Mark Kern is still keeping all but the most general details regarding Red 5"s upcoming MMO under wraps.
"We"re trying to do something new here; a little outside the norm," Kern said. "It won"t be WoW 2.0 or anything like that."
